MEDALLION It is known that the gold pendant worn by Queen Catherine Howard of England in portraits was designed by Hans Holbein the Younger himself. The original medallion drawing by Holbein is located in the British Museum [SL,5308.25].
The Holbein drawing of the medallion has a blank space in the center. The rectangular shape and the six prongs indicate the placement for a jewel. The stained glass portrait shows a coloration in this spot and the paintings have a jewel there indeed.
In Katrain from 1541 CE, Hans Holbein the Younger highlighted the medallion by encircling it with lead came thus enhancing it from the rest of the portrait.
