Hans Holbein the Younger's rendition of Katrain (1541 CE) portrays Queen Caterine Howard in a purple bodice with white lace adorned red sleeves.

The red sleeves are depicted as a substantial part of her gown. It might not be incidental that an analysis of Catherine Howard's painted portrait at the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) acknowledged in the description of the portrait (no 1119) that some overpainting from later date was obscuring interesting parts of the original. It is very likely that other paintings were altered as well when Catherine fell out of grace.

The white lace cuffs depict Hans Holbein the Younger's unique stitchwork. In the embroidery industry, the "Holbein stitch", when executed properly, cannot differentiate the front from the back of the embroidered work.
